Let’s be honest. We all make mistakes, especially when venturing into a new and unknown territory. The same can be said, for the people who are new to vaping. Although using e-cigs are much safer, than traditional cigarettes, it can be a lot more difficult to understand how to go about it. A lot of new smokers seem to repeatedly make some common mistakes, which I have addressed here below:

1. Buying a cheap and low-quality vaping device

Investing in a cheap vaping device may be the worst decision you take. Buying a bad quality vaping pen can lead to poor performance and battery life, decreased nicotine release and unnecessary smoke release. Hence, always make sure to spend that little extra money and get yourself a good quality vaping device.

2. Choosing the wrong concentration of nicotine

A common mistake made by new vapers is choosing too little or too much nicotine concentrations for their e-juice. The thumb of rule is, to buy vape liquids containing up to 20 mg of nicotine, if you are a heavy smokerand 3 mg if you are a light smoker. In case you are not a tobacco cigarette smoker, then you can even use e-liquids, which contain no nicotine.

3. Not priming the coil

This is one of the common mistakes a beginner does. If the coil is not primed, it can cause burns and leaves you with an unpleasant feeling. It is also important to do this, in order to make your coil last longer. But how exactly do you prime the coil? This is done by applying a few drops of the e-liquid, before you begin to vape.

4. Not drinking enough water

A huge problem with vaping is that it can cause dehydration, due to water loss from the body. A vast majority of vapers do not hydrate themselves regularly, thus leading to dehydration. Therefore, always remember to keep your water intake high throughout the day.

5. Carrying your e-cigarette in your pocket

Popping your vaping pen into your pocket may cause the tank to leak or the device being turned on accidentally. This can cause the coil to overheat and spark. Now, we don’t want to start a fire in our pocket, do we? Thus, it is highly recommended to use special pouches to store and transport your vaping pen. Similarly, never keep your device along with metal objects, like keys or coins, as this can lead to short-circuits and possible explosions.

6. Vaping anywhere in public

Just because a certain public area is a ‘no smoking allowed’ zone, it does not necessarily mean that vaping is allowed there. If you fire up your vaping pen in public where you are not supposed to smoke, there is a chance you will be punished. Always be well-informed as to the permissible areas where you can vape.

If you are new to the vaping scene and trying to choose the best e-juice, you might be overwhelmed at all the different options you come across. What is more important: the flavour or nicotine strength? Can I blend two flavours or should I stick to only one? And what is the difference between VG and PG? All these questions can confuse a novice vaper. So, below are a list of things you have to keep in mind before choosing the best e-liquid for your e-cig.

Choosing the correct nicotine concentration

A new vaper might be confused how to choose the correct nicotine level for them. This is crucial as too less nicotine may not give the pleasurable effect for a smoker, while too much nicotine can cause headaches and nausea. The general rule is that if you are a heavy cigarette smoker, you will need to choose the strongest e-juice, which usually contains 18 mg of nicotine. On the other hand, if you are a light smoker, a milder vaping juice of 12 mg nicotine would be sufficient. Many smokers, who are trying to quit smoking usually start off with higher nicotine levelsand gradually cut down over time.

Flavour is extremely important when choosing an e-liquid. If you don’t like the flavour, it might put you off vaping completely. Luckily, e-liquids come in a variety of flavours, to suit every person’s preference such as cocktails, fruity, food and tobacco blends. If you are a new vaper, it is recommended to start out with flavours that closely match your favourite cigarette brand. Over time, get more adventurous and experiment with unique food and fruity flavours, such as grape, watermelon, candy or even pizza! For the more experienced vapers, you can also mix different flavours to get unique cocktail combinations.

Do not forget the VG/PG ratio

VG (vegetable glycerine) and PG (propylene glycol) are two important compounds, which form the foundation for almost all vape juices. Choosing the right proportions of these compounds, can either make or break your whole vaping experience. Many users find PG to have an intense flavourand hence prefer to use it in smaller quantities. A few users have also reported that PG causes dry mouth. On the other hand, VG usually has a sweet or fruity flavour. Some users report throat tingling with VG. To get the right VG/PG ratio will take a bit of a trial and error. For a new vaper, it is recommended to start with a 50/50 ratio and adjust the quantities according to your needs later.

Keeping all the above-mentioned points in mind, go ahead and find the perfect vape juice for yourself. You will need to do a bit of experimenting, with the different flavours, nicotine content and VG/PG ratio. This trial-and-error method is definitely part of the fun of your whole vaping experience. Also, always make sure to invest in good quality e-liquids, from established manufacturers, as the cheaper ones may contain dangerous chemicals.

Have you been vaping and you suddenly feel like the taste has changed? Or even worse, that you cannot taste anything anymore? Many people tend to panic when this happens. But do not worry. This happens to the best of us and is common among vapers. It is called vapers tongue – a condition, where the vaper’s tongue loses the ability to taste the e-juice temporarily and unexpectedly. Many users describe the feeling as a thick coating on their tongue and an inability to taste anything. It can be caused by various factors, namely dehydration, damaged taste buds, dry mouth, cold, stuffy nose, or flu. The good news is that vapers tongue is completely preventable. You can avoid it using the following tips below:

• Keep yourself hydrated

Since dehydration is one of the main causes of vapers tongue, it is important to constantly drink water throughout the day, to keep yourself hydrated. Increasing water consumption is not only beneficial to your overall health but can also help your tongue register the e-liquid flavors better.

• Mix it up with different flavors

Using a single flavor in your e-cig for a long time can cause ‘sensory adaptation’, where your taste buds will not be able to pick up the different flavor notes. A solution to this is to mix and add different flavors so that your tongue can relish unique combinations. Adding flavors, such as menthol or fruit will be refreshing and help prevent you from developing a vaper’s tongue.

• Clear up your stuffed nose

Believe it or not, but your nose and sense of smell are directly linked to your taste. If your nose is blocked due to cold, flu, or allergies, you will not be able to smell properly and hence, will not be able to taste the vape juice. Clearing up your stuffed nose using nasal drops is a fast and effective method to get back your sense of taste and smell and avoid vapers tongue.

• Have good oral hygiene

Poor oral hygiene will impact your tasting ability and produce a bad taste in your mouth. Therefore, taking care of your oral hygiene is of utmost importance.

• Cut down on your alcohol and caffeine consumption

Drinks containing alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate and dry up your mouth. This can further damage your taste buds and lead to vapers tongue. Hence, it is advisable to reduce your coffee and alcohol intake.

• Take a break

Finally, if all the above techniques fail, it might be a sign your body is telling you to slow down. Take a break from vaping and leave your taste buds alone, until they heal themselves. As long as you avoid irritating them, your tongue should be perfectly fine within a week or two. In addition, try to avoid smoking, vaping, spicy foods, and acidic drinks, until your taste buds have gotten time to heal and recover completely.

The best thing you can do in such cases is to simply ask. If you are vaping, make sure to not exhale your vapor clouds into someone’s face. It is really irritating for the other person, even if they might be a vaper like you. The best thing to do is blow out into an empty space.

• Do not attack smokers

Some vapers, who have switched from cigarettes to e-cigs feel they are better and have a tendency to look down and criticize smokers. Please never do this. Remember that everyone is on their own smoking/vaping journey and they have the right to make their own choices.

• Keep your flavors simple

Everyone hates the unpleasant odor of tobacco cigarettes. Bubble-gum or mint-flavored e-juice vapors are considered to be good flavors, but finally, in the end, it’s your choice.

• Eating and vaping at the same time

Some people believe that one should not vape and eat at the same time, especially at restaurants and cafes. This may cause the food odors to mix with the e-liquid smell, creating a potentially unfavorable odor. Also, there is a chance you may irritate other diners and waiters, with clouds of smoke.

• Do not vape near children

This is common sense that smoking or vaping around your kids is not a good practice. Also, some governments ban you from exposing children to the chemicals present in e-liquids. So, avoid this at all costs, to evade getting in trouble with the law.
Lastly, be well-informed and educate yourself about the various etiquette when vaping. Different countries may have different rules regarding this issue, so make sure to do your research and adhere to the country’s laws.
